After Surgery, day 1c

We learned a little more today when the drain in her abdomin started leaking this afternoon. They called a couple of the surgical team to come look at it and while they checked it and put on a new dressing, we were able to ask a few questions.  They will be watching it a little more closely now, but said the leakage was not unusual.

We asked again what was removed other than stomach and the answer was essentially nothing except some fatty tissue around the area. There was no visual signs of spreading cancer, but we will know more when the pathology results are back early next week. That will also help determine what the next steps will be.

We asked about how the drain and feeding tube are removed and the answer was the drain tube would just be pulled out when they were done with it which would be before she leaves. The feeding tube would have to stay in for 4-6 weeks and could then be pulled. When no longer needed, it is simply capped until removed so she will have that hanging there for several weeks, but it should not be a real issue.

They will likely test for internal (where intestine connected to esophagus) leakage 3 days after surgery (in 2 days?) and if that is ok start her on some liquids. As soon as she tolerates the liquids ok, they will slowly start a soft diet (mashed potatoes, pudding, etc.). She will probably be on a soft diet when she goes home and slowly add other food.

She will likely move to another room once she is stronger and the epidural is out. That would probably not be before Sunday or Monday. When she would go home is still uncertain but mainly depends on how she is doing.

So far everyone here has been great and everything we hear about her surgeon is also great. Sounds like we got lucky in that regard.

The flowers the family sent are very nice. Thanks to everyone for their continued thoughts and prayers.
