We met with Barbara's surgeon today in Portland and she agreed that her passage way is open and there is no blockage they can find. She indicated that it is likely that she is having spasms in her esophagus that is causing her throat to close at times and then release after throwing up. This seems to fit what is happening, but no idea why she is having that problem now. She does not think it is related (at least directly) to the surgery since the pathway is open and show allow food to flow without a problem. It seems to me that maybe something from the trauma of surgery may have caused this change, but probably no way to ever really know.
She is going to schedule us for another test to see if they can find out exactly what is happening. The test is where she will swallow a barium solution and they will tract it down her throat as she swallows. The should show any anomalies with the muscles that could be causing the problem or at least indicate where the problem is. If this test shows anything, we will likely see another doctor (not a surgeon, but someone who specializes in these problems) to see what can be done. Most likely this would be drugs of some type, but not sure about that. We also asked about the nausea and she indicated that the two problems might be related, so to concentrate on the swallowing problem and then go from there. It is also still possible that the nausea is just related to her system still adjusting to the new eating process and will just take time to resolve itself.
Not much else to report, but will fill everyone in as we learn more. BTW: The swallowing may be getting a little bit better, but it is hard to tell since it seems to happen randomly, at least as best we can tell at this point.
