Today was interesting. Barbara's feeding tube was starting to come out this afternoon. Annie was going to clean the area up and noticed that the suture holding the tube in place had broken and the tube was loose. Without the suture in place, it could easily have just come out at any time. We contacted the surgeon and she had us come in to the office in Portland right away (fun last day for Annie and Parry with spending 5 hours in the car driving). They looked at everything and put in a new suture to hold the tube in place. We considered having it taken out, but their advice (which I agreed with) was to leave it in for now just in case Barbara is not able to get enough food and fluids orally, especially with the nausea and mouth sores still here. The plan for now is to work on eating enough especially as her mouth gets better and then go back in three weeks to see how she is doing. We will keep in touch with the surgeon via email and make adjustments as her eating and drinking improve.
As far as her mouth and nausea are concerned, they continue to get a little better each day, but still not well. It will likely take another couple weeks for all of this to clear up and she can really start eating more and get better adjusted to her new eating habits. Fortunately, as she feels better, her attitude and desire to get done with it all gets stronger. Hopefully we will get through the healing and onto eating and drinking soon.
